Exploring retail, hotels and restaurants through emerging trends, where
cross-pollination is reshaping expectations.

Lobbies & Aisles” explores retail, hotels and restaurants – each with distinct trends – and also converging in compelling ways. In apparel, value remains the strongest growth engine, while experience has become the essential differentiator elsewhere, especially at the upper end where bricks-and-mortar are asserting this advantage over the rising thread of e-commerce.

Retailers are taking cues from hospitality, introducing concierge-style service, lounge-like environment and in-store cafes designed to encourage customers to linger. Hotels, meanwhile, are staging fashion shows, curating art programmes and increasingly positioning themselves as cultural hubs. At the luxury end, global houses with roots in couture and accessories are extending their brands into hotels.

Restaurants sit comfortably at this intersection: many now operate within stores or hotels, yet function as stand-alone destinations that drive footfall, visibility and brand equity. Some are independently owned and family run, others have been expanding into chains.

Across all three sectors, cross-pollination is reshaping expectations. Consumers now seek atmosphere, storytelling and immersion– and brands are responding by crafting environments that keep them engaged for longer.

Retail

From shopping centres and boutiques to online clicks, retail today is driven by experience in bricks-and-mortar, and convenience. New store formats, destination flagships and the rise of dark stores are reinventing the shop floor. South Africa has one of the highest ratios of retail shopping-centre space to population in the world, value fashion is booming, and major food retailers are sharpening their premium ranges to capture affluent shoppers. In this landscape of rapid change, we also spotlight the CEOs, founders, disruptors and indie brands steering the future of South African retail.

Hotels

South Africa’s hotel landscape is having a moment. Cape Town is experiencing its biggest wave of new hotel openings in more than a decade. From luxury brands to design-driven boutique hotels revitalizing urban centres, the sector is buzzing with activity from ambitious rebrands to newcomers.
Across the country, high-end safari lodges, wine-farm estates and boutique properties continue to outperform mass-market urban hotels, fueled largely by strong international spend. And the rise of “bleisure” travel and remote-work tourism is reshaping demand. Wellness-focused offerings, co-working spaces and extended-stay concepts are fast becoming defining features.

Restaurants

We track the restaurant scene – from buzzy openings to established eateries, fine dining destinations to neighbourhood favourites. The charming coffee shops and chains that are rolling out fast and furious across the country.  From the restaurants of the Cape winelands to urban cities. From craft cocktails to rooftop bars. We profile chefs, owners and restaurant groups shaping the way we eat, spotlighting industry legends and disruptors redefining the rules.
