South Africa’s first Club Med opens in July at Tinley Manor, near Ballito, around 30 minutes from King Shaka International Airport.
Club Med pioneered the modern, all-inclusive resort, built around a strong social and experiential ethos. Everything is bundled – accommodation, dining, activities and entertainment – so once guests arrive, there’s no need to think about planning, logistics or spending. Holidays here are designed around participation and connection, not just poolside lounging. (These are renderings below).
The resort features four dedicated kids’clubs, extensive sports facilities including tennis and padel courts, an archery range, and seven swimming pools – anchored by a 70-metre showpiece pool. The emphasis is firmly on doing.
Accommodation spans 411 rooms across multiple low-rise buildings, designed with light woods, stone finishes and expansive windows that blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Of these, 66 rooms will be sold on a sectional-title, part-ownership basis.
This is Club Med’s first Sub-Saharan property not located on an island, and the brand’s first globally to offer an integrated beach-and-safari experience. The safari component is set on an 18 000-hectare Big Five reserve less than an hour away by helicopter; guests access is exclusive via a stay at the beach resort.
The resort is also positioned as a major conferencing destination. With a hall accommodating up to 450 delegates and five breakout rooms, it is expected to become the third large-scale conference venue outside a major city, after Sun City and Champagne Castle Hotel.
The project is seen as the most significant tourism investment in South Africa since Sun City and the V&A Waterfront, with the potential to catalyse further large-scale leisure developments along that coastline – and to meaningfully shift KwaZulu Natal’s international tourism profile .
Interiors are a collaboration between local studios Craft of Architecture and Mobius Interior Architecture, alongside French design studio Marc Hertrich & Nicolas Adnet – blending Zulu craft references with North Coast surf culture.
The 2-billion Dolphin Coast project (including the safari component) is being developed by Collins Residential Consortium, with primarily local funding via the Industrial Development Corporation and Absa. Club Med will operate the resort. Sustainability measures include extensive cold-storage facilities, a five-day backup water supply, and the planting of around 4000 trees.
